The most common form of identity theft is financial identity theft, which refers to any type of theft when someone uses another individual’s information for financial gain. Some examples are New Account Fraud, Account Takeover Fraud, Business Identity Theft, and Tax-Related Identity Theft.

You must report identify theft to the FTC at https://www.identitytheft.gov/#/assistant or 1-877-438-4338. Prepare your personal identity documents such as ID cards or SSN to verify your name, utility bill/mortgage statement for address verification, along with bank or credit card statements to show where fraudulent transactions took place. The identify theft report proves to businesses that your identity has been stolen.

How did McAfee choose which data broker sites to monitor?
We selected the sites that we think pose the most privacy threats by looking at a number of criteria, including how prominent they are online, how much data they have in their database, the types of information they collect, and if a site is a data source for other people search sites. While no one can ever be completely immune from privacy and identity risks, knowing where your personal data is being collected and sold is a step in the right direction to reclaiming your privacy online.

How often does McAfee scan for my data on these sites?
We’ll automatically scan for your data every three months if you are enrolled in a plan that supports full-service removal.

How long does it take for McAfee to remove my data?
The time it takes to remove your personal data will vary based on the site. Most will remove your personal data within two weeks, while some can take up to 45 days. For plans that include full-service removal, we’ll reach out to the sites on your behalf, and follow up with them to make sure that your data gets taken down. When it’s all done, we’ll let you know via email and here in your McAfee Protection Center.

Can I request the sites to remove my data by myself?
Yes, you certainly can. However, the process of manually reaching out to each individual people search site is time consuming – you might just find yourself with a new weekend job. You may even have to provide them with more of your info before they will remove profiles about you. McAfee’s Personal Data Cleanup can do this for you.

What does a security freeze do?
A security freeze stops companies from looking at your credit profile, which halts the application process for loans, credit cards, utilities, new bank accounts and more until the freeze is lifted.

When should I freeze my credit?

A credit freeze protects unauthorized access to your credit report. By freezing your credit proactively, fraudsters can’t open new accounts in your name, even if they have your personal info. A credit freeze has no impact to your credit score. Just remember to unlock or unfreeze your credit information prior to any credit applications.

Credit and bank freezes should be lifted when:

Should I freeze my credit with all 3 major credit bureaus?
Yes. Creditors may use different bureaus to access your info. Freezing one leaves the other two open to inquiries.

Will a security freeze prevent identity theft?
Not all identity theft can be prevented. Freezes can greatly mitigate financial damage by preventing unauthorized accounts from being opened in your name.

Will a security freeze affect my credit score?
No. A security freeze simply stops creditors from looking at your credit files. Your score will not be affected.

How do I share the subscription with my family?

To share your subscription with your family, log in to My Account and click Manage users and devices. From there, you can send an invitation to each family member to join your plan. Each family member will be able to set up their McAfee account and complete the setup for their online protection.

Why does my spouse need online protection if I already have it?

Every one of us has valuable personal data and our online privacy to protect. When you add your spouse as an adult family member on your family account, they will be able to set up and manage their own identity and credit monitoring, Personal Data Cleanup to remove their info from data broker sites, and more. They’re also covered with up to $1 million in case of stolen identity and up to $25K for ransomware.

How many people can I add to my family plan?

You can add up to 5 additional people to your family plan for a total of 2 adults and 4 children (minors).

Why should my children have online protection?

Kids need protection in many of the same ways adults do. They have Social Security Numbers, which if used for identity theft, could affect their credit standings. They also have usernames and email addresses that could be part of a data breach, finding their way to the dark web where criminals can access them.

When online, children (and adults) need to be notified when a website or link is risky and could lead to a phishing site or a malware download. And of course, device protection on their computers and phones can save them from online threats like viruses and hackers.

How will minors be able to manage their online protection?

The account owner can invite members as either an adult or a minor. Minors (and adults) will have access to their own accounts on the McAfee Protection Center. However, minors have access to fewer identity and privacy features than adults.

As a parent, you can choose to set up and manage your child’s account yourself and access the account in the McAfee Protection Center in order to stay on top of your child’s online protection settings, notifications, Protection Score, and recommended steps to improve your child’s online safety.

As the purchaser (admin), can I see all other family member McAfee+ accounts?

As the account owner, you can see all users and their devices. However, you will not be able to access family members’ Protection Score, settings, and alerts.

Yes, family is what you make it. Add one adult and up to four minors to your plan no matter where they live. It’s simple to get them set up. Just enter their email address and they’ll get a message with instructions.

If family members leave my plan does my price change?

No, the price of your plan will not change if family members leave your plan. You can still make the most of your plan by adding someone else to take their spot!

How does payment for the family plan work?

The purchaser (account owner) of the family plan is the only person who can manage payment and payment settings.

Can I change the primary account owner?

The purchaser of the plan will always be the primary account owner.

What devices and OS are compatible with McAfee+?

How can McAfee help me clean up my online accounts?

We’ll show you which companies or websites have access to your personal information and provide steps on how to reach out to them to have it deleted. If you prefer to save time and have McAfee send the requests with a single click, the request will be transmitted directly from your email inbox. We help you send these requests, but we do not act as an agent on your behalf.

How will you see who has my personal data?

With your approval, we’ll scan the subject lines in your inbox to see which companies are emailing you and how much of your info they might have. We will only look at the email sender, subject line, timestamp, and the first few words of the email—we will not scan the full body of the email or any attachments.
